Heads Up

COUNCIL FISH and wildlife Program Amendments

The Northwest Power Act requires the Council to periodically open its Fish and Wildlife Program for amendments.  The Program provides guidance to the Council on how and what projects to recommend to BPA for funding for the purpose of protecting, mitigating and enhancing the region’s fish and wildlife populations that have been impacted by the region’s hydropower development.   The Council has received recommendations for amendments to the Progarm and intends to have a new program completed by the end of 2008.

PNUCC, working closely with others, is engaged in the Council's Amendment process to ensure the 2008 Program achieves our five desired outcomes.  We envision a Program that:

  • includes a vision, objectives and strategies that address mitigation of hydropower impacts, rather than all human-caused impacts
  • provides guiding principles and avoid prescriptive details,
  • provides hydrosystem mitigation that complement other ongoing regional actions,
  • prioritizes projects that directly benefit fish and wildlife and share costs with other agencies, and
  • provides an ecologically based framework that creates clear priorities for project solicitation and selection.
